Show Details

The series showcases the freshest youth music genres like Hip-hop, Kwaito, House and R’nB, by profiling hot young artists who have remixed popular nostalgic songs of yesteryear.

Remix goes into the depths of popular youth culture, showcasing the people, trends, and stories behind current popular tracks, highlighting aspects of celebrity culture, while magnifying the artistic genius of engineering hit tracks from a forgotten era. The aim is to place the spotlight on the actual artists and their dreams, fears and future plans as they navigate the ever-evolving South African music industry.

The show’s episodes with focus on the following elements:  dynamic stories that are representative of a collective youth experience; songs that are able to represent a memorable period in youth culture; capturing the dreams, desires, as well as frustrations of the youth – then and now. Various episodes will highlight a distinctly popular artist or song – revealing new insights about both the song and the artist.

The format of the series will tell parallel stories of two music videos, from two songs – from the original track, now remixed into a current smash hit, intertwined with never seen before interviews of the two respective artists from the unifying song in question.

The show will be brought together by the funky yet insightful narration of Busiswa Gqulu, our new-age performance poet and singer, famously known as the Kalawa Chikita. Her energy is infectious and her words and musical analysis are authentically African.

Remix is a docu-reality show that promises to benchmark a new alternative way of capturing fresh contemporary musical content, as it unpacks real hard hitting issues, debunking celebrity culture, while staying accessible to the current South African youth.
